After School Activities![]() AthleticsPhilosophy The goal of our athletic program is to introduce students to the challenges of the interscholastic athletic competition. We strive to teach the players how to win, how to lose, and most importantly, how to play the game with respect for their opponents and themselves. The corollary effect is the growth of the students' self-esteem as they learn that success is achieved, win or lose, when they have given their best effort. To that end, every student who wishes to join a team is encouraged do so, and all students participate in games. Participation Our goal is 100% participation, but we acknowledge that some students choose not participate for physical or personal reasons. In the 2005-2006 school year, 70% of 4th - 8th graders participated in at least one sport. Students are encouraged and welcome to come and cheer on classmates whenever possible. Coaches Coaches of our teams are paid coaches or faculty and volunteer parents. In addition to having knowledge of the sport, each coach understands and believes in the philosophy of our program. League In most sports we compete in the Small Schools Intermediate League (SSIL) which is comprised of other local small schools. Our 4th and 5th grade basketball teams compete in the Burlingame Parks and Recreation League. Objectives 1. Emphasize participation and fun. 2. Encourage physical fitness. 3. Offer the opportunity to learn the value of good sportsmanship and fair play in competition. 4. Teach the basic rules, skills and techniques involved in each sport to provide improved and skillful play. 5. Provide friendly competition with other youth of the same age. Sports Policies 1. All coaches must be cleared through the Athletic Director. 2. It is the responsibility of all coaches to have a team meeting with the Athletic Director and parents to discuss practices, games, etc. 3. Games and practices are limited to a combined total of 3 per week. 4. Due to the size of our school and classes, teams may be mixed by grade or gender to promote play for all interested.
